Fuse vs Breaker
A fuse and a circuit breaker both protect electrical circuits from overloads and short circuits, but they work differently.
Fuse Circuit Breaker Contains a metal strip that melts when too much current flows.Uses a mechanical switch that trips when too much current flows.Must be replaced after it blows. Can usually be reset after it trips.Less expensive.More expensive upfront.Very fast response to overcurrent.Slightly slower but still provides effective protection.Common in older homes, vehicles, and electronics.Standard in modern homes and commercial buildings.
Which is better?
For homes: Circuit breakers are generally better because they're reusable, more convenient, and easier to reset after a fault.
For sensitive electronics: Fuses are often preferred because they can interrupt fault current very quickly, offering excellent protection.
For a modern residential electrical panel in Canada, circuit breakers are the standard choice and are required in virtually all new installations. Fuses are still found in some older homes and in certain appliances or equipment.
